- 現在的深井給人最深刻的印象，就是遠近馳名的燒鵝，居住在香港的人，大多熟識這個地方的特產──燒鵝，深井靈光堂就座落在這個地區。四、五十年代，深井只是新界一個小村落，與荃灣相近。遠在半個世紀前，深井的人口稀少。及後來外來居民漸次遷入這小村，依山及在農田搭建房屋居住，居民大部份是客家人及潮州人。同時先後有九龍紡織廠、生力啤酒廠、嘉頓餅乾廠、美國聯合碳化有限公司等建立，居民多在這些工廠就業，以維持生計。由於交通不太方便，居民的生活和社交都是在村內，因此居民有很好的鄰舍關係。 仰面而上，踏過數十級梯級，一座依山而建的禮堂，就是我們的教會──深井靈光堂。深井街坊大都認識在這裏已數十年的教會和小學，並習慣地叫它「靈光」。 「靈光堂」 （TheEmmanuelChurch），按英文 Emmanuel 的意思就是以馬內利──神與我們同在；聽教會長執的分享，教會的名字是「聖靈之光」的意思，因為神與我們同在，就有聖靈的光輝。 靈光堂與香港一些其他宗派及獨立教會相似，是由美國的宣教士來香港建立的。靈光堂的根源可追溯至二次大戰香港淪陷前 （1941-1945）的「靈光書室」（Emmanuel Book Room），這書室是由三十年代來華的宣教士Dr. & Mrs. Lechmere Clift 所建立，戰後仍然運作。直至1948年 Dr. Clift 被主接回天家，Mrs. Clift 於1950年將靈光書室交給「洛杉磯聖經學院」（Bible Instituteof LosAngeles）及本會創辦人饒培德牧師夫婦（Rev. Dr. & Mrs. Charles A. Roberts）繼續服事香港的基督徒。 靈光堂創辦人於早期蒙上帝的呼召，從美國前來遠東地區宣教。曾於「中國長沙饒培德牧師湖南聖學院」擔任院長，造就上帝的工人，後約於五零年來港，與「洛杉磯聖經學院」開始早期靈光堂的事工，當時只有英文聚會，參加者多是外籍信徒。
