About the organisation
We are a Hong Kong Section 88 charity. At The New Normal we offer free mental health support for anyone through regular peer support groups, events, training and resources. We run and collaborate on in-person events throughout Hong Kong, run by passionate, trained volunteers with lived experience.
Mission statement
We want everyone to have access to the support they need, regardless of their identity or circumstance. We empower people with lived mental health experiences. We support people living in Hong Kong who are struggling to access the mental health support they want. Because No one should face mental pain alone. We aim to make mental health support immediately accessible to all, to reduce the stigma around seeking help, to contribute to suicide prevention and to empower individuals to support one another by sharing their lived experiences. The problems we aim to solve: Hong Kong faces a deepening crisis of social exclusion and mental health. One-third of the population has no one to rely on for emotional support, and the suicide rate is the highest it has been in over 15 years. Additionally, 61% of Hong Kongers experience poor mental health, and 21% live in poverty. Compounding these issues is the pervasive stigma surrounding mental health, which results in 74% of people not seeking professional help. The public mental health system is overwhelmed, with long wait times, while private care remains prohibitively expensive for many. The situation requires the urgent addressing of mental health as a critical issue within SDG 3. However, current limitations make it hard for vulnerable individuals to access the care they desperately need.
