Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Foundation for Shared Impact ("FSI", "we", "us") collects, uses, and protects personal data when you use Charity Finder at charity-finder.org ("the Site"). We handle personal data in accordance with the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (Cap. 486) of Hong Kong ("PDPO") and the six Data Protection Principles ("DPPs") set out in Schedule 1 to the PDPO.

1. Data user

The data user for personal data collected through the Site is Foundation for Shared Impact. For privacy enquiries or to exercise your rights under the PDPO, contact us at info@shared-impact.com.

2. Kinds of personal data we collect

Depending on how you use the Site, we may collect:

  • Account data — name, email address, and authentication credentials when you register or sign in. The same login may also be used on our related Grant Finder service where that integration is enabled.
  • Suggestions and correspondence — information you submit through "Suggest a change" or when you contact us (for example, your name, email, and the content of your message).
  • Usage and technical data — such as IP address, browser type, device information, pages viewed, and referral URLs, collected through analytics and similar technologies.
  • Security data — information processed by Cloudflare Turnstile when you complete CAPTCHA challenges on forms, to help prevent abuse.
  • Favourites and preferences — if you are signed in, charities you save or other account-linked activity stored in our systems.

Most charity directory content on the Site relates to organisations, not to you as an individual. We do not ask you to provide personal data merely to browse public charity listings.

3. Purposes of collection and lawful basis

We collect personal data only for purposes that are directly related to our functions and activities, and that are lawful under the PDPO. These purposes include:

  • providing, operating, and improving the Site and directory;
  • creating and managing user accounts and favourites;
  • processing and reviewing suggestions you submit about charity records;
  • communicating with you about your account or submissions;
  • maintaining security, preventing fraud and abuse, and enforcing our terms;
  • measuring site performance and the effectiveness of outreach (including analytics and advertising conversion tracking, where enabled).

Where collection is required for a particular feature (for example, an email address to create an account), failure to provide that data may mean we cannot provide that feature. Other fields are voluntary unless we state otherwise on the relevant form.

4. Classes of transferees

We do not sell your personal data. We may share personal data with service providers who process data on our behalf and only for the purposes described above, including:

  • Supabase (hosting, database, and authentication);
  • Cloudflare (Turnstile and related security services);
  • Google (Google Analytics and, where enabled, Google Ads conversion measurement);
  • Vercel or other infrastructure providers that host the Site.

Some of these providers may process data outside Hong Kong. Where personal data is transferred outside Hong Kong, we take practicable steps to ensure that your data is protected in a manner consistent with the PDPO, including contractual safeguards where appropriate.

5. Cookies and similar technologies

The Site may use cookies, local storage, and similar technologies to keep you signed in, remember preferences, and understand how visitors use the Site. Analytics and advertising partners may also set cookies or use similar technologies when those features are enabled.

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Disabling certain cookies may affect sign-in, form submission, or other functionality.

6. Retention

We retain personal data only for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes for which it was collected, including to satisfy legal, accounting, or reporting requirements, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law. When data is no longer needed, we will take reasonable steps to delete or anonymise it.

7. Security

We implement reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal data against unauthorised or accidental access, processing, erasure, loss, or use. No method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is completely secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.

8. Your rights under the PDPO

Under the PDPO, you have the right to:

  • ascertain whether we hold personal data about you and request access to that data (Data Protection Principle 6);
  • request correction of personal data that is inaccurate (Data Protection Principle 6);
  • be informed of the kind of personal data we hold and the main purposes for which it is used (Data Protection Principle 1).

We may charge a reasonable fee for complying with a data access request as permitted by the PDPO. To make an access or correction request, email info@shared-impact.com. We will respond within the time frame required by the PDPO.

If you believe we have handled your personal data in breach of the PDPO, you may lodge a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) in Hong Kong. We encourage you to contact us first so we can try to resolve your concern.

9. Direct marketing

We do not use your personal data for direct marketing unless we have obtained your consent or are otherwise permitted to do so under the PDPO. If we intend to use your data for direct marketing in future, we will provide the notice and obtain the consent required by Part VIA of the PDPO.

10. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will change when we do. Material changes may also be highlighted on the Site. Continued use of the Site after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy to the extent permitted by law.

Terms of Use

By accessing or using Charity Finder, you agree to these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, please do not use the Site.

1. The service

Charity Finder is a public directory of information about Hong Kong charities, operated by Foundation for Shared Impact as part of its Shared Data initiatives. The Site is provided for general information and research purposes. It does not constitute legal, tax, investment, or professional advice.

2. Accounts

If you create an account, you are responsible for keeping your credentials confidential and for activity under your account. You must provide accurate information and notify us if you suspect unauthorised use. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms or that we reasonably believe pose a security or abuse risk.

3. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use the Site in any way that violates applicable laws in Hong Kong or your jurisdiction;
  • scrape, crawl, or harvest data from the Site at a rate or volume that unreasonably burdens our systems (see also our technical rate limits);
  • attempt to gain unauthorised access to our systems, accounts, or data;
  • submit false, misleading, or defamatory content through forms or other channels;
  • use the Site to distribute malware, spam, or harmful code.

4. User submissions and suggestions

When you submit corrections, suggestions, or other content ("Submissions"), you represent that you have the right to provide that information. You grant FSI a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use, reproduce, adapt, and publish Submissions for the purpose of operating and improving the directory. We may edit, decline, or remove Submissions at our discretion. We are not obliged to publish every suggestion.

5. Directory content and disclaimer

Charity information on the Site is compiled from public and third-party sources and may be incomplete or out of date. Our Disclaimer forms part of these terms. You use directory data at your own risk and should verify important details independently before relying on them.

6. Intellectual property

The Site's design, branding, compilation, and original content are owned by FSI or our licensors and are protected by applicable intellectual property laws. Charity names and facts drawn from public registers remain subject to their respective sources. You may link to public pages of the Site provided you do so in a way that is fair and does not suggest endorsement or misrepresent the relationship.

7. Third-party links

The Site may link to external websites (for example, charity websites, Grant Finder, or government registers). We are not responsible for the content, privacy practices, or availability of third-party sites.

8. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by the laws of Hong Kong, FSI and its directors, employees, and volunteers will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising from your use of the Site. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Site is limited to the amount you paid us to use the Site in the twelve months before the claim (which, for free use of the directory, is HK$0).

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited under Hong Kong law.

9. Governing law

These Terms of Use are governed by the laws of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. You agree to submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Hong Kong.

10. Changes to these terms

We may revise these Terms of Use from time to time. The updated version will be posted on this page with a revised "Last updated" date. Your continued use of the Site after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised terms to the extent permitted by law.
