The CIArb was founded in 1915 with the aim of promoting arbitration as an alternative method of dispute resolution to litigation. The objectives of the Branch are to provide a regional organisation for Members of the Institute (Fellows, Members and Associates) who are resident in East Asia generally. The purpose is to promote, encourage and facilitate the practice of settlement of disputes by arbitration and other means of dispute resolution, and to support and promote the status and interests of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. This includes: (1) providing education and training in areas including the law and practice relating to arbitration for those practising or wishing to practise as arbitrators; the reading of papers, delivery of lectures, etc. (2) holding demonstration arbitrations and the acquisition and dissemination by other means of useful information connected with arbitration; (3) promoting improvements in the law relating to arbitration and in the general practice of arbitration; and (4) promoting and protecting the interests of the public in relation to the conduct of arbitrations as a means of resolving disputes.

Cecilian Singers, The

The Cecilian Singers was founded in 1962 and it is one of Hong Kong’s oldest running mixed choirs. We sing a wide-ranging repertoire from madrigals to world music; by composers ancient and modern, both a capella and accompanied. Our programmes reflect our love of choral diversity and it is something we are known for. The choir’s original aim was to promote European choral music with a repertoire spanning at least five centuries. It started out predominantly as an a cappella group, performing both sacred and secular music. Over the years, the choir has also sung some larger works by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Handel, often with a small orchestra and soloists.

In Thailand, our corporate donor designed and installed an irrigation system for a farm that supports a school for children with special needs. In Kenya, we operate a business incubator for women, supporting the creation of 140+ small businesses that have brought economic freedom and empowerment. In Zimbabwe, we support the electric tricycle revolution, helping rural women access transport and transform their communities. In Gansu, China, girls from the poorest province receive scholarships to complete high school and continue to university. In Canada, donor support has funded hundreds of hours of mental health counselling through local charities. In Madagascar, we helped establish school vegetable gardens that provide nutritious meals and agricultural skills training for rural students. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, we partner with a local nonprofit to support the reintegration of former child soldiers into their communities. And that’s just a snapshot. From Africa to Asia, North America to remote parts of the Amazon, we are proud to stand alongside local leaders and communities who are working tirelessly to build a better future.
