About the organisation
Food Commons Foundation is a tax-exempt charity dedicated to tackling the problem of excessive leftover food and its social, environmental, and economic consequences. Our primary goal is to collect edible surplus food from sources such as markets and retailers, reducing landfill pressure and environmental pollution while redistributing nutritious food to those in need. We also explore innovative food up-cycling solutions to maximize the value of rescued food. By linking social welfare and environmental organizations, government, and the business sector, the Foundation strives to reduce waste, support communities, and create green job opportunities. We remain committed to a community-oriented approach, encouraging broad participation beyond a single funding source, and aim to extend food recovery efforts to all 18 districts of Hong Kong. Food Commons is the community-based resource network under the Foundation, fostering long-term collaboration among action groups, businesses, government, and public organizations to manage surplus food effectively. Since its beginnings as the Food Sharing Project in 2009, Food Commons has pioneered food recovery initiatives that combine environmental protection with community mutual aid. Operating as Food Commons Foundation Limited since 2015, we have rescued more than 11,373 metric tons of edible food, benefiting over 10.07 million people. Every HK$1 donation generates HK$6.5 worth of fresh food, supporting hundreds of grassroots families and elderly each week. With shifting government policies and the conclusion of our market recovery project, continued community support is critical to sustain this safety net and prevent fresh food from being discarded.
Mission
Food Commons Foundation and its predecessor projects have actively promoted sustainable food recovery since 2009 under the principle of “collect locally, distribute locally.” Every day, we work with community organizations and volunteers to collect surplus food from markets, restaurants, and merchants. After careful sorting and processing, this food is redistributed to those in need — including the elderly, low-income families, CSSA recipients, the unemployed, the disabled, the sick, children, minorities, and other disadvantaged groups. Through publicity, education, and collaboration, we build a community surplus food sharing network that reduces waste and supports vulnerable populations. The Foundation raises essential working capital and recruits volunteers to expand food rescue actions across districts, ensuring that saving food and helping people remains a shared mission.
