Hong Kong Academy of Sciences, The
EducationHuman ServicesThe purpose for the establishment of The Hong Kong Academy of Sciences ("the Academy") is to promote the development and advancement of science and technology in Hong Kong, and to raise the city’s profile as a centre of scientific excellence. The idea of the establishment of an academy had floated informally for many years, but the SARS crisis in 2003 dramatised the need for a high-level local organisation that could provide leadership and reassurance at such a time. In 2006, a working group was formed under the chairmanship of Professor Chi-Ming Che of The University of Hong Kong. In 2008, a proposal was prepared and submitted to the HKSAR Government. As subsequent discussion showed that the situation was not fully mature, it was decided to wait for some more time. Vision The Academy thrives to provide leadership in developing Hong Kong as a centre of scientific and technological excellence. Mission The Academy promotes the development and advancement of science and technology in Hong Kong, and informs the public on relevant issues.

The powers of the Academy are laid out in the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Ordinance (Cap. 419), Regulations and Bylaws. Since the Medical Registration Ordinance was amended in 1996, the Academy has played a more active and significant role in the accreditation of continuing medical education for the purpose of specialist registration. The upsurge of specialisation in medicine encourages branching of the profession. Between 1992 and 1997, 15 constituent specialty Colleges were recognised by the Academy Council, all of which run their own structured training programmes. The Specialist Register was established in 1998. According to the Medical Registration Ordinance (MRO) and Dentists Registration Ordinance (DRO), a registered medical practitioner or dentist who wishes to have his/her name included in the Specialist Register of Medical Council of Hong Kong (MCHK) or Dental Council of Hong Kong (DCHK) must be either a Fellow of the Academy, or certified by the Academy to have training and qualification comparable [or equivalent in the case of an application under DRO] to that required of an Academy Fellow in the relevant specialty. Grace Vessel Limited
EducationHuman ServicesFrom Compassion to Inception In 1994 our founders came in contact with children living in remote villages. Seeing these children could not afford schooling due to abject poverty they had compassion for them. They started a fund drive and were able to support 10 children at that time. We are currently sponsoring 150-200 poor students each year. From Caring to Pioneering New Services During home visitations we found students and their families are ignorant of health and hygiene knowledge which make children vulnerable to health hazards. Such awareness led us to care for their medical and health care needs. In another front, to keep pace with the nations rapid urbanization we extend our student subsidy services to migrant students through partnership with a school. Through such subsidy services we are able care for migrant families AT RISK. Expectations It is our hope that when these children have grown up and became productive members in society that they will care for the poor such as giving financial aids to poor students. We hope they are willing to share with others even though they may not have enough for themselves..
