China Hong Kong Chapter of the Alliance for Healthy Cities, The
Environment and AnimalsHealthUnder the District Administration Scheme launched since 1982, Hong Kong is divided into 18 administrative districts. The first Healthy City Project (HCP) of Hong Kong was initiated in Sai Kung District in 1997. This first-ever HCP was featured by its bottom-up approach where tremendous efforts have been made in engaging the community to promote health awareness and to make collaborative efforts in building a healthy community. A cohesive partnership infrastructure across sectors conducive to sustainable development has also been built. Over the years, more and more districts in Hong Kong joined the “Healthy Cities” movement. When the Alliance for Healthy Cities was inaugurated in 2004, Sai Kung and Kwai Tsing Districts were among the founding members. To consolidate the work of various administrative districts and to take forward the “Healthy Cities” initiative in a synergistic manner, the China Hong Kong Chapter of the AFHC was established in September 2007. The Inauguration Ceremony of the China Hong Kong Chapter cum “Healthy Cities” Forum was held on 14 September 2007 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Overseas speakers included Dr. Shigeru Omi, the then Director of the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office and academics/ experienced practitioners from Australia, South Korea, Japan, China and Macau.

PETA Asia Limited
Environment and AnimalsPETA entities have more than 9 million members and supporters globally. PETA Asia is dedicated to establishing and protecting the rights of all animals. It operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way and focuses on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in laboratories, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment business. It also works on a variety of other issues, including spaying and neutering and the killing of “pests.” PETA Asia works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns. Located in Hong Kong, PETA Asia is the base for animal-rights campaigns across Asia, a region that is home to more than one-third of the world’s population. PETA Asia may be young, but it has already created quite a stir with attention-grabbing ads and groundbreaking protests in countries like Malaysia, Thailand, and Japan, where public demonstrations are rare. PETA Asia has already won victories big and small for animals—from shutting down a roadside zoo in Vietnam to distributing more than 35,000 vegetarian starter kits in the Philippines.

Hong Kong Dog Rescue Limited
Environment and AnimalsHKDR was founded in 2003 for the specific purpose of saving dogs and puppies from the Hong Kong Government’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) Animal Management Centres, where around 10,000 dogs and puppies are destroyed every year. A lot them of were family pets that have been abandoned on the street or in country parks, while others have been directly surrendered. Many are puppies that are the result of irresponsible owners not desexing their pets, or are those born to abandoned or stray dogs. They all have one thing in common and that is that they are homeless and unwanted, and have just four days to live unless they are chosen for re-homing. HKDR is funded solely by private donations, sponsorship through the Life Saver Club programme, the sale of HKDR merchandise and fundraising events. All of the dogs and puppies that HKDR take in for re-homing are health checked, vaccinated, given flea, tick and heartworm prevention and de-sexed. Those who require additional veterinary treatment or surgery are given the best available. Dogs with behaviour problems are rehabilitated using Positive Reinforcement training methods to make them ready for adoption. HKDR relies heavily on the time and efforts of dedicated volunteers to be able to operate and many of the important functions of the organisation are handled solely by such volunteers, such as our Foster and Life Saver Club programmes, and even the Volunteer Coordination itself. HKDR is proud to be a No Kill Organisation, meaning that no dog under our care will be euthanised for any reason other than when it is the only humane option.

Consumers Acting For People And The Environment Limited
Environment and AnimalsPublic and Societal BenefitConsumers Acting for People and the Environment Limited (CAPE) is a non-profit organization that was established in 2003. In 2005, CAPE gained charitable status and has been tax-exempt under Section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance (Hong Kong). We are the first NGO in Hong Kong to emphasize the role of consumers in acting for environmental issues. While generally regarded as a green group, we define ourselves as a grassroots group that focuses on how modern consumption patterns have detrimental effects on the environment and on the lives of both modern and tribal peoples. The world is full of living beings of which the human race is only one species. However, our daily consumption exploits nature. Indigenous and traditional cultures recognize that they are but a part of a community of plant, animal, and spirit beings, and live in harmony with the land and the complex ecological systems upon which they depend. Our mission is to build a sense of responsibility and stewardship, thus shifting behavior towards responsible consumption.
