Every year throughout Asia, millions of men and women migrate to find work needed to support their families. This migration process is fraught with challenges ranging from non-transparent placement practices to inadequate education. Employment agencies often deceive and manipulate the placement process for their own financial interests and even if a job placement is successful there is inadequate resources available for migrant workers to advance their skills and livelihood. Unless action is taken, over the next century, these problems will become exponentially larger and negatively impact the development of countries throughout the world.

In 2017, MakerBay Foundation was established by Cesar Jung-Harada, a Japanese-French educator, environmentalist, and entrepreneur, in order help underserved youth to make an impact by developing their maker skills and mindset, as well as forming an inclusive maker community. We operate from one of the largest makerspace in Hong Kong to offer people the space, tools and training to become innovators. For our projects, we have developed a comprehensive innovation curriculum, backed by a large community of scientists, artists, researchers and experts from Academia. Apart from the makerspace in Tsuen Wan and a smaller one in PMQ Central, we also assist in setting up makerspaces in youth centers and schools, both in Hong Kong and abroad. We aim to raise awareness about shark conservation, particularly the unsustainable practice of shark finning, and to reduce consumption of shark products in Hong Kong. Every year, at least 100 million sharks are caught worldwide for shark fins and other products, with over 50% of the world’s shark fin being traded through Hong Kong alone. As apex predators, sharks are a crucial part of the marine food chain. The demand for shark products has contributed to the rapid decline of many species, with several already nearing extinction. Removing sharks from our oceans will threaten the delicate balance of ecosystems that are valuable sources of food and key elements in regulating our climate.
