Established in 1993, the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (Academy) is an independent institution with statutory power to organise, monitor, assess and accredit all medical and dental specialist training, and the responsibility to oversee the continuing medical education and continuous professional development to maintain the standard of specialists practising in Hong Kong. The powers of the Academy are laid out in the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Ordinance (Cap. 419), Regulations and Bylaws.
The objectives of the Academy are:
a. to promote the advancement of the art and science of medicine;
b. to foster the development of
i. postgraduate medical education and continuing medical education;
ii. the study and practice of medicine and its specialties; and
iii. medical research;
c. to promote
i. the integrity of the medical profession;
ii. ethical conduct in the practice of medicine and its specialties; and
iii. the improvement of the standards of such practice through training, programme approved by the Academy;
d. to promote the improvement of health care for Hong Kong citizen;
e. to foster a spirit of co-operation among medical practitioners; and
f. to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas in relation to all aspects of the art and science of medicine and matters connected with the medical profession.
