Samaritans, The
Human ServicesThe Samaritans is an independent, non-profit, non-religious organization established in 1974 jointly by Mrs. Elsie Tu, GBM, CBE and Mr. Andrew Tu for giving confidential emotional support to people who are suicidal or are in general distress. The service is provided to anyone regardless of background and demographic attribute. Our flagship 24-hour multilingual hotline service is operation by unpaid, trained volunteers. Since our inauguration we have received more than 710,000 phone calls from callers from all walks of life. In the fiscal year ended 31st March 2019 alone, our team of 110-plus active and devoted volunteers, invested close to 12,000 hours in answering more than 30,500 phone calls, averaging almost 84 calls a day. We believe talking through their feelings with a Samaritans volunteer can often be a turning point in their lives. This can help alleviate the feeling of despair and provide immense relief, with someone listening, giving them time and attention, and acknowledging and respecting their feelings. In 2003, we launched a local Befriending email service in both Chinese and English for people who prefer writing to talking. In the fiscal year ended 31st March 2019, 1,027 emails were replied, on average 84 emails per month. Seeing a need for being more active in preventing of suicide among those who are experiencing emotional difficulties, The Samaritans is determined to reach out to the community actively. We launched the Youth Life Skills Programme in 1997, which targeted squarely on teenagers, which was gradually restructured and renamed as Young Samaritans Peer Support Programme (YSPSP) in 2010. In the year of 2018-19, 4,132 students were reached through the programme. In the past 3 years (2016-19), the total number of students reached was more than 22,100. The Supporting The Aged Responsibly (STAR) Programme was introduced in 2015. The targets of the programme are elderly and their carers who are under immense pressure The programme aims to enable the participants to know about common emotional illnesses and suicidal thoughts in the elderly; proper means to communicate and attend to the elderly and ways for the elderly and carers to take care of themselves and to manage pressure effectively. In 2018-19 a total of 24 sessions of talk, sharing, mutual-support and counseling group meetings with follow-up activity of the programme were organized. A total of 312 participants from 7 NGOs were served. Since its inauguration, the STAR programmed served more than 960 elderly and carers from 28 partnering NGOs. Likewise, The Samaritans partnered with various organizations, such as community centre, schools, companies to deliver training sessions or seminars on suicide prevention and the essence in providing emotional support. In 2018-19, 12 talks and workshops were delivered, serving 800 participants of different backgrounds including secondary and university students, teachers, domestic helpers and persons from all walks of life. In addition to preventive works, we also provide postvention work in supporting people bereaved by suicide through a monthly supporting group for survivors. Our aim is to provide a safe, confidential environment in which bereaved people can share their experiences and feelings, thus giving and gaining support from each other. Though, The Samaritans is preparing to continue to develop in its key areas of strength, which are increasingly important to the societal development of our city. Build on our 40 years of experience in suicide prevention and providing emotional support, we thrive in further expanding of our reach and service scope to where we were unable to reach.
